UEFI BIOS

Postby zel on Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:11 pm

So I just put together a system for my mom/step-father last night. The MB has one of those new UEFI BIOSes. It does move pretty quick from POST to starting windows. I mean a traditional BIOS does move pretty quick these days also but the UEFI BIOS seems to beat it by a few more seconds and is really more than that. It just feels like something we should have had a long time ago really. I mean higher resolution, a better looking and mouse driven GUI, and the shit in the description is translated into actual English. I've only just started messing with it but so far I think it's a long over-due step in the right direction.

It just reminded me of that old thread a while back so I thought i'd revive it kinda lol :P but yea UEFI is pretty sweet. Makes me want to rebuild my rig but I just can't justify that expense.

Nice, i like how they went in-depth on what they did like the parallel loading. I think my next build i'll use RAID1 both for the fault tolerance and the read increase barring a huge drop in SSD prices. I don't think i would use an SSD for my rig unless it hits 500G at a reasonable price, i mean i have a 1T right now as my main drive and its at about 750g full :/ mostly installed games and such.

I honestly don't reboot often but then again if the boot times were that fast, i might actually shut down more often to save on power, i idle at 300W to 350W. If it idles all day long @ $0.12 per 1kwh then it costs me 1 dollar per day to leave it on and at max i pull ~560W so if i played all day it's about $1.61 a day. Thats only for power used not including cost to cool the room back down which during max load it gets freakin hot but we're talking more about idle savings so... hmmm i dunno.... suddenly the savings just don't seem worth all the trouble haha. I'll prolly still do it for the boot time tho :)

people going crazy in comments, pretty funny. I mean it boots fast but even an SSD isn't making that mofo boot that fast, seems to me they've really done some work under the hood and it's about time. I don't liek the tile interface though. I'm not trying to use a phone, i'm sitting at my desktop...
