Cameras

Postby buzz on Sat Jul 24, 2010 6:07 pm

My old point & shoot, a little Canon Elph SD600 finally kicked the bucket. It was prolly time to upgrade anyway .. What do you guys recommend? I like something portable to take with me on my travels and also not break the bank.

Olympus has a new(er?) line of point and shoots that are waterproof to ~15 feet but look like a normal camera. My friend just picked one up that is 14 megapixel and he likes it. Very cool to be able to take a digital cam into a pool or the ocean. It is funny because I held it and had a very strong urge to keep it away from the water... We're programmed...

I may pick one up. I had an Olympus YEARS ago and liked it quite a bit.

Canon S90 is the bee's knee's. Has the biggest image sensor of any pocket point and shoot(bigger sensor = cleaner, less grainy images) and an excellent lens.

Looks good, got a silver award at dpreview.com... Here's his conclusions page: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons90/page19.asp

I forgot to add - dpreview.com is the shit when it comes to digital camera reviews. Extensive tests if you care to go into fine detail, lots of sample images, and a well-written conclusion if you want to skip to the end.

I love my canon S90, the best thing, next to a D-SLR...
granted the auto focus can be a little screwy at times, but for manual control it rocks... it has some excellent low light capabilities..

but if you just want a point and shoot i would look towards another canon...the SD4000 is the next best thing.

i thought i was gonna love the review of the s90 when it came out, but it turns out they didnt rectifiy the wide angle image at all, let it barrel distorsion like crazy, then just fix it in software. im not really a fan of my camera doing all that behind the scenes, i guess it looks good in the end though. definitely nice having an f2.0 zoom though.

actually you know what ignore the above. unless your a photography enthusiast the S90 is an awesome choice. Its more of a point for technical discussion, the camera makes great pics and is easy to use.

So I held off a little bit on the S90 purchase and now that i'm ready, I find the S95 is out with some more features like 720p HD Video recording and stuff. It looks to be a worthy upgrade

probably is if the price difference isnt huge. doubt id pay $100 extra just for 720 p video though.
