Well I made my yearly pligrimage to Daytona this year for the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. If you've never heard of it, it's the Grand-Am seaon opener and is a 24 hour long endurance race inside the Daytona Speedway. No NSACAR bullshit hear though. They utilize some of the straights but it's also a road course. There are a few different classes, ranging from the insane Daytona Prototypes, then the GT class full of Ferraris, Porsches, and Audi R8s', and then some smaller class with Mazda turbo Diesels and a Porsche Caymen iirc. Anyways, they all race AT THE SAME TIME, so you have a mix of hyper cars and GT class cars all gunning to get that inside turn. It's chaos. I love it. All of the manufacturers setup huge showcases with their newest offerings, and it's just luxo-car porn for a mile. Anyways, here's how it went.
Arrived Friday night after work to settle into the Bus. We had a full hookup right outside of the track, and then we just drove the cars in when we wanted to see some action.

Upon getting to the track Saturday morning before the race (started at 3:30PM), there was a track class of 6 identical M5's just shredding up the course. They sound incredible when at full tilt.

We had Garage passes so we headed over to see what kind of prep these cars go through. This is how you align a 24 hour endurance Ferrari.

Unfortunately this Mustang destroyed itself during the warm up laps. That is NOT going to buff out.

Each team gets 32 SETS of tires for the race. 64 cars x 128 tires = A shit ton of tires were flying all around the entire race. Just cart after cart full of them.

The Aston also never made the race. I really wanted to hear this thing.

Now who is the lucky bastard that not only gets to drive a Ferrari for a living, but also is sponsored by Patron? Seriously? I need this gig.

Now we come to what I call "oh it's THAT kind of event" section. I swear to hell about every 2 minutes I would look up and see some sort of badass ride driving around or parked. Even in the damn RV lot I saw Lambos, Ferraris, Maseratis, Vipers, Lotus'.. it was just sick. I literally wanted to park my G8 under the bus and put a sheet over it. It had no right to be in the same company.

Magnum PI was at the race too. Waited forever but I guess he just parked it there and TC and Rick picked him up in the Island Hopper Chopper

A Vanity plate? On a Ferrari? Hmm.. never would have though it.

I can't even make fun of this 430. Oh how I want one.

A Little Classic Italian love.

Red Sex time

Black Sex time (I don't discriminate)

Oh just ANOTHER badass Ferrari.

DAT ASS shot...

Race time was apparocahing and our passes granted us access to the starting grid. ALl the drivers are just chilling by their cars as people run around ogling the machinery and getting autographs.

A few of the more colorful rides.

Getting that last bit of rest before 24 hours of straight hell.

Wild graphics that are amazing at Night. Many of the cars have EL lights and crazy reflective surfaces.

The Mazda team had THREE entires in this race, all using Skyactive Diesel engines. The smallest was a Mazda 3 with a 2.2 Turbo Diesel running 55 pounds of boost. It put down a cute 330HP and 440TQ.

The clock is Set..

So we hustle to the grandstands for a birds eye view of the race. The track definitely has a little rake to it lol.

And here comes the Green flag.
[ img ]
The Daytona Prototypes start first.
[ img ]
Then the GT class follows. Looks like Paul Blart's Mall Cop team entered as well. Looks like the Porsches "may" have the edge here, but it's a LONG race.

More of the GT pack.

We continued to drink heavily while watching the first couple of hours, then headed back to the Bus to watch the race on the TV and grill up someribs and steak. Once full and rested, we headed back inside for the night action. All I know now is that I need to invest in some real L glass. I tried EVERYTHING with my POS 18-135 3.5/5.6 lense and seriously these are probably the best pics I got out of 100+, and they 're not good. Grr. You get the point though. Non stop road racing from 3:30PM until 3:30PM the next day.

All in all I had a wonderful time. I truly admire what these teams do and just how much effort is involved to get a car to run wide out for 24 hours straight. If you ever get a chance to attend, I HIGHLY recommend you do it.
